The Next Adventure

Well looks like my next adventure is just around the corner. In April or May I will be heading to Cambodia through a program at my university. I will be working at a university in Cambodia which NSAC is involved with. I will be travling over with another undergrad and some faculty, I think it is going to be an amazing experience, and I am super excited!

Right now I'm filling out the forms to get my passport renewed, and learning about the orentation program that I can take part in through the goverment agency which is sponsoring the program.

The Amazon Part 1.

Alright, so I'm not so good with the whole updating thing. I've been really busy since I've been home.

Back to that Amazon update I promised.

May 5th 2008
Salvador --> Amazon

Off to the airport at 8am, hung out at the airport until 10:30 or so, just Tine and I. We got into Sao Paulo around 1-ish, we hung out for a few hours before we met any other exchange students, we also enjoyed some peanut butter, and spent some time enjoying the cool weather outside (when we got off the plane we were like *OMG COLD*. We met up with some other intercambistas, a Canadian and an American, as well as Hector. We eventually found the whole big group and eventually checked in. We got in to Presidente Figuerido at about 3:30am.. ai ai.

Woke up 9:30-ish, we had our trip meeting, had lunch in PF and then went trekking, which was fun. We saw some great caves and waterfalls, and went swimming. After we left we went swimming in the rapid close to the hotel which was super fun!! I scratched my leg up, but it was still pretty awesome. We had dinner at the hotel and then just relaxed, I played pool with Emil, Tina and Austin.

up at 7am, on the bus at 8, a few kids (including Tine) missed the bus, oppps! We went to some waterfalls which was awesome, it started raining, but whatever we were wet already right? We went to Balbina, there is a huge hydro electric plant, which formed this huge *tree cemetery*. We also went to an animal reserve, which had lots of manatees. After we went to this HUGE waterfall, the water was going very fast, because it had recently rained a lot.

May 8th 2008
Presidente Figuerido --> Manaus

We left and went to a super nice hotel in Manaus, like 5 stars, amazing. All the flight attendents and pilots stay there, in the evening we made friends with one of the front desk guys, and I asked him Cassio was staying here, he wasn't but hey I tried. During the day we toured around Manaus, went to a few muesuems, we also saw the gourd used to make the round part of the Berimbau. I ended up talking to a really nice girl in one the stores at the hotel, she was 18, had a 2 year old and was married; it was really nice to talk to her, sort of contrast how Amazonia (the state where Manuas is located is different then Bahia. We ordered pizza, which was really good (and better then the $50R a plate dinner served by the hotel haha.

Manaus

Breakfast was AWESOME! I mean not that anything else was expected, but ya, awesome. We went to the opera house which was beautiful, it was built by the rubber barons back in the day, when rubber was the main export of brasil (to the point people sent their laundry to europe to get it done) After lunch we went to a craft market, I got a few cute little things. In the evening we all chilled in the wave pool at the hotel, which was pretty sweet.

Sorry for the lack of update the last month has flown by!

I was in the Amazon the 5th-15th and I'll post about that in a few days when I'm more settled here.

I'm home now. It was a long flight from Sao Paulo to Halifax. I stayed in Sao Paulo for a few days.

The last month in SSA was good. Lots of fun, not enough sun or beach but it was good. I miss it, but it's good to be home...

Only 28 days.

28 days to surf, travel, dance and just enjou Brasil.

I'm leaving for a trip to the amazon on Monday, and I'll be away until the 15th of May. After that I have a few days here, and then the 22nd- 25th is the District conference for Rotary here... after the the 26th I'll pack, and the 27th at 13:52 I'm outta here. I'll be in Sao Paulo for a few days, (27-30) and then May 30th, I'm gone.

I'm really excited for this trip! It should be lots of fun. Tomorrow Tine and I are going to go shopping, and make sure we have snacks, and stuff, we have 8 hours in Sao Paulo on Monday, so we'll need food.. and lojas americanas is cheaper then airport food...

This week was pretty good.. we had a holiday so I spent a day doing nothing.. which was nice. Thursday I went to a show (Asa de Aguia, a big show to mark 20 years of the band) with Tine, Susanne and Kelsey (*boyfriend* of Susanne) it was soooo much fun. Ivete was there, so obviously I was happy.

I think I'll head to the pool later.. read, ~~listen to music~~...except my mp3 player is in my purse at Tines.... tan.. I need to get good and dark before I head home.

I visited Rachael Wednesday after school, because I missed her and a package arrived there for me (yay Wendy!) Kraft Dinner, Hot Chocolate, magazine, hair bands, and a cadet lapel pin... haha only Wendy

April showers, bring May flowers

Well April has been an exciting month!

I started surfing this month (I'll try and get pictures tomorrow) and am doing ok.. I'm not amazing, but I manage to stand up, and ride the waves, for a little while anyway (note to self, throw more weight forward and stay lower)

I went to a formatura (graudation party, sort of like prom) last weekend with Flavia, Tine, and Vianey, it was lots of fun.

This past weekend was a holiday weekend. Friday was the formatura, Saturday I went to a birthday party with my parents, and Flavia, and after we went to a movie. Sunday we went to Praia de Forte to visit a friend of theirs, and Monday, relaxed.

School has been normal.. nothing to special

I talked to Thais today and we were planning for my stay in Sao Paulo, I have tickets booked now, only 5 more weeks! Its going to be awesome! I leave here the 27th of May, and leave Sao Paulo the 30th and get home the 31st... not so far away.

Well with a new month, came a new family for me here in Brasil! Right now I'm living with Dona Sandra and her fmaily (the last family of Tine, and first of Vianey) Its great! They're all wonderful, although very early risers... leaving home at 5:50 for school is not something I've ever had to do before!

Last Saturday I went to a 15 anos party; here for a girls 15th birthday its a huge thing, this was for the birthday of Carol, a girl who lives in my first condmiums. I went with Iris, and Yasmin, Elaine, Carol, Lucas, Ivana, Jenner, and Tais were all there as well. It was good fun, I think Tais and I got back at about 5:30am!

Early that day I went to a churrasco for school, it was lots of fun, and I got a chance to tlak to some of the others kids in my class...

Today Flavia, Tine and I went to the theater, for a one-man show about Portuguese, and the history of Brasilian portuguese, I didn't understand everything but it was really good. After I tried to go to another 15 anos (a friend of Flavia) but that didn't go so well.. Right now her and Tine are there and I'm at home...

Well I think Ill pop in my Banda Eva DVD and watch that for a bit before going to sleep...

Tine and I went to the beach last Tuesday, it was lots of fun. Except when it started to rain.

Not much other exciting new from Brasil, although on the Canada front I was accepted to University this week!!

Normally people take the elevador (see above) or the... train thingy, but I walked.. not a good idea, unless you speak portuguese, and are familiar with Brasil.. tourists be warned!

My friend Ashleigh went back to New Zealand this week, it was really sad. She helped me out a lot in the last few months, taking me out, and showing me around, and introducing me to tons of awesome people. I miss her lots!

The next few weeks I'm not doing much, school, beach usual Brasilian stuff. The 5th of May I'm off to the Amazon for 10 days, and then the 28th of May I'm going to São Paulo to spend a few days with a friend, and then June 2 I'm leaving! Its so far away, but at the same time so soon, so I want to make as much of the time I have left here... we'll see how that goes.

This afternoon its looking like some quality beach time with some of the other girls here in Lauro de Freitas, which should be good.

Just makes getting it easier..but any address for me in Brasil you have is probably good

Well its been a few weeks since I've updated, and a lot has changed!

Carnaval was last week. It was amazing!

So Carnaval was awesome, I went 3 days, Thursday, Friday and Saturday with a bunch of the other exchange students, I wanted to go other days, but unfortunetly that didn't work out... oh well. Each day was a different band, Thursday was Negra Cor, Friday Babado Novo and Saturday was Jammil. We also saw Ivete on Thursday and Friday, and Saturday we saw Chica Fé, which was awesome (only for me though... since none of the other exchange students knew the band)

I'm back at my first house now due to some stuff... I can't really talk about it, but if anyone is thinking of sending anything, probably best to hold off until March when I move families again, but you can send it to my other house, I'll get it plus its an excuse for me to go over there which is something I'm always looking for.

School starts tomorrow. I'm not excited, but I am.... I got new shoes yesterday and also bought a couple of books, one by Karl Marx, in portuguese, and the Count of Monte Cristo in english.

I'm going to a babyshower this afternoon, which should be fun and hopefully I can work in sometime to go over to my other house and chill there for a little bit.

Bia, my host sister loves this. I've seen this clip more times then I can count in portuguese, so many we wore out the DVD... ridiucolous. Zumalaicara is Saulos alterego.

My favorite song from Brasil! Ivete is one of the most popular singers in Brasil, she used to be the lead singer of Banda Eva, back in the day (Banda Eva has been around for about 25 years, with various lead singers, many of who are still popular here)

Humm this is clip is the same, but from festival de verão... to give you an idea of just how far away I was I wasn't entirely sure if it was saulo singing with here, because could really hear or see... 50,000+ people!

Chica Fé- Vou Trocar Meu Colar Pra Um Beijo
One of my favorite groups, they don't do orginal music, which is common here, but Sergio, the singer is Saulos brother, and we went to a lot of their shows, and I really like them.

Cachaça- Ivete Sangalo
An awesome song, one I know the words to. Cachaça is a type of alcohol, she is talking about that and carnival. I was actually at this show.. although at the very back.. and I could barely see her... but I was there! This is a song that is done but pretty much all the Axé artists in Brasil.

Saulo tried to read it today and was like.. nope. good times

Awesome week here in Brasil! Amazing in fact.

Tuesday I went to an Olodum concert with Elaine, Carol, Marcella (friend of Carol), Betty (mother of Marcella), Lucelia (Elaines sister). It was amazing! I don't have any pictures because only Marcella had her camera, but I'm going to try to get them.

Wednesday we went to a Banda Eva concert. It was release for a DVD. The lead singer, Saulo lives across the street and is friends with Elaine e Cassio, so we were backstage, which was awesome, great view. The concert was AMAZING, I love Brasilian music. It was great to be on the inside of the fence while all the screaming fan girls were on the outside. Hilarity. The best part was when Senhor Jorge (Saulos father) wasn't allowed through the gate, so he climber it, sharp-pointy-stay out things and all.. it was classic!

Friday was Carols birthday party. It was a big affair. I helped with the cooking and stuff, mostly dish washing, because (compared to Brasilian kids) I have intense dish washing skills (which, as my mother well knows is not saying very much) The party itself was awesome, Saulo e Sergio (Saulos brother, singer of Chica Fé) both played, which was great, and there was lots of dancing. Brasilian adults have no quams about dancing with the kids, very different then Canada for sure.

Saturday was party recovery, I went to the beach in the afternoon with Elaine, Cassio and my Tio Cleison. it was lots of fun. I got a (henna) tattoo, so did Elaine. I also attempted roller blading on Saturday, which resulted in large amounts of road rash (right leg, left arm and hands), and a nice big gash on my leg, it pretty sweet, guys dig chicks with scars, no? Brasil, well the whole exchange thing has been ruff on my legs, first there was orentation and the swimming+rock incident and then the falling and now this... my legs are not pretty ha.

Sunday I did interviews for next years exchange students, which was long. A few amazing kids, a few good kids, only a few mediocre... they all had to speak english, so obviosuly I was great for that part, and I did ok in portuguese to.

Today not much is going on, I'm probably just going to stay home, and work on scholarship essays, fun I know. Tonight I may go to interact I'm not sure. This week I'm not really sure whats up. I think Wednesday we're going to another Banda Eva show, I do believe IVETE SANGALO(!!!!!!!) will be there, shes my favorite (ok second favorite) brasilian artist, her music was first introduced to me my second night in Brasil when I went to a dinner party with Iris and Luiz, and spoke no portuguese so I ended up watching a DVD of one of her concerts for like 2 hours. Ya I'm jazzed for that.

It's hot in Brasil. Right now I wish I was somewhere cold, I was not built for this heat. It's simple when it's cold... and extra sweater, 3 pairs of socks and a extra duvet and your good. When its hot, there is no escape.

Also South American water... I'm fairly sure its making me sick... not like gross sick ala Domincan Republic Feb 2007, but sick... I don't no, I always feel a little off, it bugs me.

conference was good, tons of pictures at my picasa site, so check that out. I've been to the beach a few days this week and Friday is my new host sisters birthday so I need to get her something, I'm thinking a picture frame because they're easy and then a picture of us, oh how creative. I think Vianey will come as well which will be nice, its going to be a discotech. Birthday parties in brasil are not something undertaken lightly, even for the younger ones, i was at a party for Kevin and Nikki (Sons of Alle and Tati) yesterday 3 and 6, there must have been 60+ people. I guess its a little different because we live in a condimnium complex, so its not like you can't invite people, but still.. a DJ, trampoline, the works, lots of fun.

Time to go sleep a little.. my stomach is not happy with my current vertical state. remember to send mail!

So Pantanal and Bonito 07!

Amazing! Honestly best week of exchange so far.

Started on the 28th. Left here at like 6am to Brasília and then from Brasília to Belo Horizonte. Christine and I were met at the airport by Thiago, and then he took us to a hotel where we hung out for the afternoon. We went shopping, Bianey, christine, Meds and I, which was fun. Met an American guy, had lunch with him, it was nice. I went back after they went to McDonald's, I was sort of tired, and needed some alone time; although I left sort of like a loser. I showered, it was raining really hard I love walking in the rain.. well running but anyway, and it was soo nice to have about 2 hours to myself. Other intercambistas arrived, and at about 10pm we left on the Bus. We made some stops over the night, I slept, and was sort of half awake for them. Didn´t eat until lunch the next day. and at about 8 we arrived in Campo Grande, where we spent the night, and all the other exchange students arrived. We left the next morning for the Pantanal, arrived there at like 3. We blew 2 tires on the way, and I bought "Armani" sunglasses for $R15... like $8US haha. Went Pariah fishing which was fun. and then dinner, good times. Swimming, and a little party after dinner.

Next day (this is.. Tuesday I think?) Went horse back riding! Sooo much fun! I´ve never done it before, it was amazing though. After went swimming and then lunch, after lunch we went trekking, which was cool. Another little festa and then a BBQ for dinner. I also went on a night safri which was fun. Last day in Pantanal we went on a safri, saw a leopard which was insanely cool (see my pictures) and after lunch headed off to Bonito. Sat with clare from Pantnal to Miranda and with Conny from miranda to Bonito. Had dinner in Bonito, with Conny,Annie, and Nora.. which was great.. Two Canadian guys ordered beer, ended up getting sent home (to their cities..well towns.. actually what in Canada would be a village, here in brasilm, not to canada, as far as I know), stupid kids. I also saw my friend Maria, from Germany in Bonito, she was there with another tour company and Clovis our district inbound cordinator, which was cool.

Went to a waterfall place for the mroning, the bus broke down again so we didn´t do what we were going to do in the afternoon. After that went home;..well to the hotel, went into bonito for dinner, Clare, Ray and I went to a convience store and bought snacks for the bus... including Oreo like cookies, called BlackPower!!! lol we all got a laugh, and we bought Jello, and water, and took our picture with tons of stuff, including beer and the store clerk lol.. good times. Ate pizza for dinner, and then desert pizza (bannana cinnamin) sooo good! After that took pictures, and went back to the hotel, we could have stayed another hour, but we didn´t really have anything to do so clare ray and a few other and I went back.

Next day went snorkelling, which was awesome, the water was really blue, because of the magnesium, and it was soo unbelivabley clear, I don´t have any pictures, cause I didn´t get a chance to buy the CD, but it was amazing. After we went rafting, which was also amazing. I was in a boat with McBrasilian (our Doctor... I spenmt for ever trying to come up with a McName for him and thats all I got), Ray, Clare, Christina, James, turkey, a few others, I´ll have pictures of it soon (claire and I bought the CD and shes going to mail it to me this week), but ya... amazing!!! After went back and then to a resturant for a talent show and party.. Clare Ray and I rapped, it was pretty awesome, I´ll upload it to youtube tomorrow haha ridiculous! Fun night

Next day we went to the Blue Lake caves.. again Magnesium= blue water, pretty cool. After that lunch in bonito and then on to the bus... I sat with Connie and Hector, how were totally making out.. akward? i think so. Anway...sad to see everyone leave. Got tro Belo Horozonite and chilled at the airport, my flight got changed, so I ended up going via Rio instead of Brasília. Got home at 12:40.. so tired.

Spent today and yesterday at home. I´m moving families on Friday/Saturday which is exciting!

Today I went into Vilas, paid off my debt, sent a package to my parents for Christmas, bought a dress for a 15th birthday (its like 16 in Canada.. but more like My super sweet 16 on MTV), and two new shirts, as well as a birthday present for above mentioned Maria, and a Razor... because disposibles just aren´t cutting it.. parden the pun.

I can´t believe how long I´ve been here. Sometimes it feels like I haven´t been in Nova Scotia in forever, but right now, I feel like I just arrived.

My portuguese is coming, I just finihsed a month long course, and now I can talk queit a bit, not as much as I´m like, but still, pretty good since 4 months ago I spoke none.

Things here are good, lots of friends.. sort of, not like real friends, its hard because I can´t really talk to them very well, but better then nothing.

Last weekend I went to a club in Salvador, it was wonderful! No drinking, of course. But dancing and such, lots of fun! I don´t have any pictures, but next time. Here you only have to be 18 to go to the clubs, yay for being the oldest intercambista in the Lauro de Freitas... it has finally turned out to be a good thing!

On Sunday I leave for my trip to the Pantanal, which I´m really excited for. Vianey, and a german girl in Salvador, Christine, are going as well. I still need to get some stuff, snacks for the flights + hours long wait in Brasilia, and maybe a couple new pairs of shorts, but I´m not sure.

I sent postcards out to a ton of people a few weeks ago; I hope they get to everyone! the Brasilian postal system isn´t always great.

I´ll do a big update after the trip with lots of pictures (taken with my spiffy new camera!)

Today I went to the beach with my friend Vianey, she is from mexico.

Lots of fun.

Last night she slept over here, and then we spent like..4 or 5 hours at the beach, it was tons of fun, here are a ton of pictures from our day.

I´ll start with today and work backwards... easier my tired brain

So today. We went to a BBQ at Cris and Arturos, fun.. I ate way tooo much. But I actually participated in the conversation for a little bit.. mostly talking about exchange, and differences between Canadian and Brasilian culture, stuff like how at home I do my own laundry, .. do dishes (ok I load the dishwasher.. my actual dish washing skills are lacking, I won´t lie), clean my own bathroom (on ocasion), work, and I´m (at least compared to the Brasilian 18 year olds I know) very independent. Kids here (well in the upper class... here its really.. the have and the have-nots... so the haves is who i live with, and know.. minus the maid.. etc) have maids, who do everything but dress them in the morning. Everyone was saying that Brasilian kids would have a hard time not having that, I don´t think they would... you just get used to it. Like I´ve gotten used to doing very minimal cleaning. We also talked about my trip I´m taking at the end of October.

This morning I asked my mom if my Mexican friend Vianey could stay over friday night, and she said yes, so Friday Vianey is going to come over after school, we´ll do.. something, and then Saturday we´re going to go to the beach! I´m going to try and get a proper brasilian bikin (top atleast) so I can get rid of some of the tan lines I have going on..

Yesterday, we went to the beach, one I hadn´t been to before, it was gorgeous!

Me prentending I´m a surfer at the beach yesterday. Hopefully in the summer I´ll take some surf lessons, and learn how to do that :) I´ve always wanted to, and now I have a chance!

Friday we went and looked into Portuguese classes, which I´m going to start on Tuesday, I´m excited. I think its not so much that I can´t, its that I lack confidence, so hopefully this will help.

and thats pretty much all thats happened recently, thats worth reporting. Here are some random pictures from... a few different things

Me, and host mom- the day my host brother (igor) left for Mexico, she was very sad

Me a bunch of Igors friends (who I didn´t/ don´t really know) and Igor, right before he left.. i think my red blazer kills his blue blazer.. blue is so over used.. lol

Me and a guy I go to school with whose name I don´t know (I´m really bad with names, here at least, and a lot of people just start talking to me because they know my name... you are known as an exchange student)

My trip is all booked and payed for. I leave on the 28th of October, and get back the 5th of November, I´ll also be moving families over that time. I finish school on the 13th of November, I´m excited for that. I´m going to see if in early December, or late January if I can get down to Itabuna to visit my friends there, or maybe go visit kids I meet on the Pantanal trip, so I can see other parts of Brasil, which would be really exciting, and cool.

So thats all to report from brasil! Excellent relaxing weekend down here in Bahia.

Saturday I did a whole lot of nothing, well actually I walked, but I´ll get into that after.

Sunday was awesome. We went to a beach, up past Praia de Forte (about an hour north of here) it was gorgeous... we went to the Tamar project, where they resuce tutrles, and save turtle eggs... so beautiful! and then we went to a beach in another town, and by town I do mean a very small little hamlet of paradise. It was great, the water was so warm, lkike taking a bath.. which was nice, because our shower has not had hot water for about 3 weeks... I like my cold showers as much as the next person, and I think i read somewhere cold showers make you live longer.. but at this junction in time.. I´m down with a shorter life for a warm shower... for now..

So Walking.. well I´ve resigned to walking to combat this weight gain thing.. its not much but its something. I walk about 3 kms, everyday, just around condimiums where I live.. think Midnight Express except with more sun, less Turkush prison, and I have an MP3 player...where as Billy Hayes did not.

Sheila is going on a trip! At the end of next month I´m headed to the Pantanal. Its looking amazing, I´m soo excited, I can´t even describe.

Things have been ok here.. nothing to exciting, I´ve met all of the other intercambista in Lauro de Freitas now, they´re all super nice. In October we´re going to Salvador for the interact forum, I´m looking forward to it, we´ll get to see all the other intercambista from the district again, and Natalie, my friend from floria, who is living in Itabuna is going to lend my the 7th Harry potter Book... mostly I´m going to read it because I´ve read all the other ones, and why stop there...

Soo on to my weekend, thus far at least.

Yesterday school= blah, we watched a movie *under the surface* espoisá d´agua in portuguese I think. It was ok, english subtitles>>>>>life lol.

Show was great fun.. fun Carnival-esque music, people really like to party here, so it was great! Hopefully we´ll go to more, it cost $R25 about $15 canadaian.. but it was worth it. Negra Cor was the band, it was at Bahia cafe hall.

Today we went to the beach.. my thighs are sunburned, I can feel it under my jeans... ewwy feeling... I´ll put some aloe on them later. It was fun, I ate cashews (which are huge here) freshly roasted. Yum. and fried cheese, also surpringly good, and had a drink with pineapple, it was sooo good.

This week we´re going a project at school... it involes us getting shirts... This week is also like mid-terms, so the exchange students get to leave at like 10am, cause we´re to cool to write exams. Friday is also a holiday, something about an independence Day... I´m not sure.. apperently people travel, but don´t think we´re going anywhere... maybe the beach

Well today was a bit of a downer.

There are 10 or 11 Canadians down from London (Ont) they´re all members of the University of Western Ontario Rotaract club here on a international project and I was suppose to be helping out with the project which is building 4 houses in a needy village close to here. But alas I´m not allowed to miss school to do it, and I thought I was going to be allowed... it was a whole big thing... and anyway it sort of ruined my day.

I did however manage to peace out of school today and hang out with them. We went to the village called Quingoma and saw the rotary sponsored school, and met the families who are getting the homes; it was really nice. I hung out with two of the girls at Heathers house, had lunch there and such.. mummm salmon! and met Heathers son Gabrielle, he´s 2 and pretty much the cutest kid ever no lie! His father, Danilo is Brasilian so hes all perma-tan and such! so cute!! And the girls and I went down to the beach, and walked for a little which was nice. We went back and played with Gabirelle and Tito (pronounced Che-to here) cam over, and after we picked up everyone else and went to the Furniture store to buy some things that the Rotaract Club was going to donate to various institutions here (mattresses, fans, washing machine etc) and then we went and got construction supplies.

When I got home it was like a big thing, that I wasn´t allowed to go and whatever... I guess one of the guys in rotary was like no you can´t go, you must go to school.. and I was all.. that bites... so now I have to go to school and see if I can hang with them in the afternoons and evenings.

Other then that nothing to exciting, I´ll post pictures and a video from today, tomorrow, or when they get uploaded.

Well its been a while since I updated here... I did mean to do it more, but ahh I get side tracked.

Partys partys partys.... (last) Saturday was a BBQ with ex-intercambistas back for Heathers wedding, Sundays was Igor and Larissas going away party and Mondays was in Salvador, it was someones birthday party. The power was out pretty much the entire time, which was unfortunate... I had a nice chat with Susan, and her host sister, as well as Larissa. I met two of the other inbounds at the parties (Susanne from Canada (BC) and Joel from Germany)

Igor (host brother) left last week, so he´s off in Mexico now.

Got lots of info this weekend on the trips I can go on this year, one to the Amazon is a about 150$ more but seems a lot better, you get 5 nights on a boat in the amazon (plus 4 nights in a hotel) and sleep on hammocks on the boats, and get to keep the hammocks and make jewelry... I´ll send you the email it looks AMAZING!!! Also there is a trip to Macchu Pichu! Its like $2000 though (US) but seriously how cool would that be.. although I´d love to go by myself, like back pack around south America in a few years, and be able to do it my way... but the tour looked really cool... lots of things that´d be hard to do on your own.. its only like 8 days though (plus two travel days...

we went whale watching Sunday. I was mad sea sick.. it was very unpleasant,... 50ft little "Schooner" type deal maybe a 1.5 meter hull... it was a little sketchy.. 2-3 meter waves... not fun. Saw some whales though, just the dorsal fins and some blows, but it was cool.. minus the insane vomiting part... not so fun.

Went to Rotary in the yesterday (which meant I ate two dinners). It was good, met my councillor he doesn´t see there being anything wrong with me volunteering at the English school so that´ll hopefully work out. I´m also going to go build houses with Rotaract which I´m very excited for. Some Canadians are coming down from London (Ont. not England) so that´ll be nice! I´m super excited, and Heather will be there, shes really cool (Canadian who came here on exchange a few years ago and is now married to a Brasilian).

so you´re wondering whats new in the life of everyones favorite Brazilian Exchange Student (Brasilian Intercambista.. if you will) Well the answer not to much..

Went to a BBQ with a bunch of ex-intercambistas last night, and met one of the other inbounds for the district, joel He is from germany. It was nice. He´s pretty cool, but sort of tired, His hostfam couldn´t come get him (his city/town is a few hours from here) so he´s chillin in Vilas for a few days, well until after Orentation.

Today (I think) there is a party for Igor, he leaves this week. THis morning we went to an Interact thing and planted what hopefully will grow into Palm trees, and we planted some other flowers which we got to bring home (in sawed off water bottles)

Weather here has been what is apperently typical Brasilian winter weather (in the north) so there has been more rain then there was over my first few weeks, and its sort of chilly (I have a long slevve shirt on right now :o!

well back to watching Pan-Am games, right now equerstrian stuff.. the Canadian guy isn´t doing so well (Ian Miller) but the Canadian who went before did really well so thats good.... its only canadians and Brazilians in the final... so far as I can tell... geee wonder who I´m cheering for...

Well its been an interesting couple of weeks.

My portuguese is coming, I manage to talk to my host mom a little bit everyday... I understand most of what she says, if she talks slowly.. which doesn´t always happen.

School is well.. school. I do work in Bio and physics, mostly because I already know the stuff we´re doing. Other then that I listen to music, and read.. and try and learn portuguese.

I went to a party last weekend with the Canadians, it was lots of fun.

Hopefully this week I´ll be able to get out to the villas with them a few days.

My family here is really loud maybe because there is no carpet and the walls are all... brick? more of an echo.. I don´t know.. its frusterating, because I always seem to have a headache... Other then that they´re good. I like it here, but I´m also excited to get to live with other families.

Yesterday i went with my friend Tais to McDonalds, there was like.. a huge street party, it was crazy! Think you, and your 400 closest friends, fairly free flowing booze, and loud music. It was intense. Not to mention that probably more then half the kids were underage (18 here)... It wasn´t a situation I was particulary comfterable in, but it was fun.. part of the experience I guess.

I can´t think of anything else that anyone reading this will find interesting, so on to the pictures!

Well 9 days until I leave... 8 if you don't count today.. .actually in (almost) exactly 216 hours I'll be boarding my flight to Toronto!.. It seems so soon... but yet so far away; mostly because in the next week I'll Graduate from high school, go to prom/ safe grad, and pack!

I've been talking to my host family a little bit, mostly over MSN. Its a little frustrating, because I don't understand enough Portuguese to understand what they are saying and I can't respond to what they say in Portuguese. I'm sure it'll be fine once I'm there. I've been listening to a Brazilian Portuguese podcast, and I've learned a little bit... mostly weather. I find I can understand spoken stuff better then written.. verbal comprehension > visual comprehension

My room is more or less clean.... I have a pink floor.. I was unaware.. its always seemed to have been a combination of various colors from my wardrobe to me...*insert a harsh quip about my house keeping abilities here*

I started making pins today... So far I have 1. I'll post pictures later this week... as well as a time line of my packing adventure!

Things have been pretty much the same since last week, learning portuguese, ~~watching Gilmore Girls~~ going to school etc. Lots of fun. I´m now I member of the interact club here, so that´ll be lots of fun, and something to do at least.

My blazer should be here on Monday/ Tuesday... right now its in Miami.

Orentation is two weeks from today, I´m getting excited for it. I sort of hope it is in Salvador, but at the same time it wouldn´t suck if it were just at school, cause it is soo much easier for me.

Had a sleepover and went beach last night/ today with my amigas from school. We all went to Eríkas house (which by the way is AMAZING!) we ate we talked.. there was dancing involved... ya it was fun.

Slept until 10:30-ish.. had breakfast, it was a bannana thing.. it was great! After that we went to the beach which was also amazing... I have pictures which are below.

Well week one of school down!

I haven´t done anything.... I´m like one of the loser kids I mocked in high school for coming and not doing anything.. except I´m way cooler.. since I´m in Brasil and such.

Well I suppose I have done something, In that I made friends (go me!) so thats good... I´m going to try and make them rice krispy squares..if they have rice krispys here (I´m sure they must!)

Brasil is still ok, I understand more Portuguese, and have even formed the odd sentence (ok like 2 but shhhh)

Since its my birthday today..

The girls at school threw a little party for me, it was great. They made cake and bejios (kisses, they´re a pasty-ish thing... not like Hershey kisses) they gave me a pair of earrings, (see below) and a sheet of English-> Portuguese translations. My Host family gave me a pair of havaianas (flip-flops, havaianas is Portuguese for Hawaians) and two bracelets.. good times.

There is going to be another party tonight, So i´ll post pictures of that to... so far pretty much my best birthday in recent memory..

well it´s been a swell couple of days,

Yesterday I went to my first Rotary function... and let me tell you, they are rarely a rockin´good time (interesting, but not always, earth shatteringly exciting) but when all you understand is hi, thank you, and rotary international... it becomes akin to watching Gilmore Girls ala Mr. and Mrs. McVomit, as Lauren puts it so affectionately. It as good after/ before the insane amounts of talking I did´t understand, I met a girl who is going to PEI on exchange this year, as well as a few other girls who had been on exchange, I think that I maybe going to see Harry Potter with one of them... whose name I cannot remember... Names are difficult here.. cause I can´t pronounce them, and I met so many people... it´ll get better I´m sure.

Food is good, I haven´t been sick at all... on Friday my stomach was a little weird after dinner, but I took a Tums and it was fine.

I watched Lost and Gilmore Girls ('S Wonderful, 'S Marvelous), yesterday, it´s good because all the TV i watch has subtitles, so I can understand and learn some Portuguese.

Well time for some reading, studying and podcast listening!

Boa Noite!

...good evening! So day one here in Salvador, its was good. I went to the beach with my host mum this morning, the beach was really beautiful, and the water was very warm... well compared to home.

After that we came home, and then went over to my school to registar... I didn´t understand anything.. but Yasmin gave me a little tour... it has a pool. :O

We went to the supermarket.. its huge.. well I guess same as home, but with everything.. a Superstor one Stop.

Had lunch... it was hat I think was Chicken, Rice, Beans, and Salad.. it was very good.

Igor and I watched Spiderman 3 and now I´m unpacking... all in all a good day,

Yesterday I got my typhoid fever shot, the only one I had to get. HA! yesterday was also graduation, it was nice, not to long.

Today I got a Portuguese-English dictionary, and right now I'm going to go pick some stuff up, print pictures, and get some more passport sized photos. Then it will be power point time, and then Halifax later to pick up some gifts for my host families.

So on to this massive task it is!

Not to much new to report... only 16 days until I head out...
Mostly just stressing because of exams.

This weekend I'm going to do major cleaning in my room... start packing perhaps. Also I plan on going around town and taking pictures of all the sights and such..

Well here is a run down of whats going on.

I leave for Brasil on the 3rd of July.
I start school on the 9th of July.
I have yet to start/think about what I'm going to pack.
I'm the middle of studying for exams, and cleaning my room.

Right nows things are a flurry of action... my visa stuff is getting sent up tomorrow, and I need to start working on my powerpoint.

Thats all for now... I'll try and update here every few days until I leave, and then when I get a chance
